Vladivostok Travel Guide

The name means `Lord of the East’. This famous Pacific port and naval base, is located at the eastern most end of Russia. When Port Arthur fell during the Russo-Japanese War, Vladivostok suddenly became the main Russian Pacific base. The city was a thriving and multicultural commercial centre before World War II.

When the Trans Siberian rail line was inaugurated the city teemed with French hoteliers, German store owners, Swiss speculators and merchants and sailors from every where. From 1958 to 1990 it was entirely closed to foreigners, as it became a transit centre for prisoners waiting to be shipped to labour camps.

Today it is a moneymaking, fast-spending, high living centre and is often compared to San Francisco because of its picturesque hills and sea view. The battleships moored offshore somewhat blur this picture perfect.
