Scottish National Gallery

History

The Scottish National Gallery is one of top free visitor attractions in Scotland and the second most-visited attraction after the Castle in Edinburgh. It is a neoclassical building located on The Mound in central Edinburgh and was designed by William Henry Playfair. The Scottish National Gallery houses of the best collections of Scottish as well as international art from the commencement of Renaissance up to the beginning of the 20th century.

Several exhibitions, displays and exceptional must sees are organized now and then in the three-storied gallery. The Must Sees include “The Unmissables Paintings” comprising 60 works that can be seen in 40 minutes.

Visitors must not leave the Scottish National Gallery without seeing Sandro Botticelli, The Virgin Adoring the Sleeping Christ Child; John Singer Sargent, Lady Agnew of Lochnaw (1865 - 1932); Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn), Self-Portrait, aged 51; Sir James Guthrie, A Hind's Daughter; and Sir David Wilkie, The Letter of Introduction. The all-inclusive part of the collection includes the history of Scottish painting. All the major names, including Raeburn, Wilkie, McTaggart and Ramsay are represented in depth.

The best time to visit the Scottish National Gallery is sometime during the months of May through September.

Timing

The Scottish National Gallery is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (6:00 pm for August only). The gallery is open until 7:00 pm on Thursdays.
