Garden Route

History

Garden Route is a well known south-eastern coastal stretch which has a varied and ecologically diverse vegetation, many lagoons and lakes.

The route has oceanic climate which is the mildest climate of South Africa and is the second mildest climate in the world. The place has mild to warm summers, temperature not rising beyond 28 degree C and mild to cool winters with the extreme temperature being 10 degree C. Rain occurs year round and has a unique mixture of indigenous forests of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest along with wetlands.

Around 300 species of birds are found in the route’s habitats and it is the home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals among other marine life. The bays of the Garden route serve as nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale which comes there during the winter and the spring season, that is, from July to December.

The place is well known for its hiking trails and eco-tourism activities.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the place is between February to April and July to September.

Trivia

The Garden Route has a treat for the adventure enthusiasts round the world as it houses the world’s highest bridge bungee jump, the Bloukrans Bridge Bungy.
