Table Mountain

Table Mountain is a prominent landmark and a popular tourist attraction in the Western Cape, South Africa. Rising to a height of 1, 082 meters, this magnificent mountain is visible from almost everywhere in Cape Town. The flat-top mountain summit measures nearly 3 km and provides a panoramic view of the city and beaches below. The panorama stretches from Table Bay to False Bay and around the mountain to the Hout Bay Valley and Kommetjie.

Table Mountain is bordered by Devil’s Peak to the east, by Lion’s Head to the west and by Signal Hill to the north. Devil’s Peak got its name when Van Hunks, a pirate, got in a smoking contest with the Devil. When the table cloth- the famous white clouds spills over the mountain when the south-easter blows in the summer- is seen, it symbolizes the contest. The spiral walk up Lion’s Head provides 360º view of the Cape Peninsula as you go around the mountain. Signal Hill is a popular scene for couples especially after dark when the hill is flooded with sparkling lights.

Table Mountain is home to a variety of flora and fauna, many species of which are found only on top of the mountain. A total 1470 species of plants are to be found here such as 250 species of daisies, silver tree and the wild orchid Disa Uniflora. Animals such as baboons and porcupines live here freely, as well as furry rodents called Rock Dassies. The Table Mountain Ghost Frog is an animal found in no other place on the world.

The mountain offers about 350 recognised walking trails and walkways to follow by the athletic and the energetic. the trials can be deceptive sop be prepared. If the energy sapping route is not for you, the Cableway offers a quick and scenic ride to the top and in three minutes you can be admiring the Cape Peninsula from its high points. The cableway has awed locals and tourists alike over and over again providing a 360 degree view of the Mother City of Cape Town. On the summit there is a restaurant and a souvenir shop, from which letters bearing the Table Mountain postmark can be sent.

Best time to visit

Visit Table Mountain in the peak months between September and April as this is the time when the cableway is mostly open. The best time to visit is in late September when the snow has melted away and the brilliant autumn colors are starting.

“50 Places to See before You Die”, is what MSN Travel UK and others decree about Table Mountain. We disagree – it is a place not to be visited once before you die but as many times as possible because each time you see something inimitable and breathtaking!

The cable car runs all day till late in the evening in the peak season unless strong winds or poor visibility forbid its use. Hence the timings are dependent on the weather and opening hours vary from season to season.
