The Museum Africa on Jeppe St is a great place to delve into the history of the city and has some fantastic exhibits, including rock art and write-ups and interesting recreations on the early mining history and culture of the town.
Johannesburg has the advantage of being the rapidly developing and ever-changing non-official capital of an amazingly ethnically diverse country, with the result that it is a treasure house of both traditional and modern merchandise.
Gold Reef City is a mere 6 km south of the city, and has some eclectic attractions, but tourists mainly go for three reasons – the variety of bars, pubs and eating joints there; the amusement-park style games and rides; and the historical reconstructions of Jo’burg’s history.
Jo’ burg does not boast a cuisine unique to the city. However, one can easily find a variety of world cuisines –French, Italian and Portuguese restaurants are particularly popular.
The two-week Arts Alive festival in September features some of the best cultural talent in the country, with jazz, street theatre and cabaret competing for attention on the streets.
