What to Pack

Sri Lanka be is a tropical country, lightweight summer wear is the best form of clothing to bring along – but westerners should remember that there are certain dos and don’ts related to attire especially when it comes to women. Clothes – skirts, dresses, etc are safest long, and going topless or even scantily clad (no matter how hot it is) is definitely taboo, except perhaps on certain beaches.

Although the weather’s generally hot, if you’re planning a trip up into the hills, carry along warm clothing – a thick sweater can be very welcome on chilly evenings. Remember, too, that Sri Lanka can get very wet during the monsoons – a raincoat or an umbrella is a must if you are likely to encounter rains.

Most toiletries and medication, including common western brands, are readily available in the larger towns, but it usually makes sense to carry along your own supplies, just to stay on the safe side.

Travel Documents

Nationals from 24 countries (including the USA, the UK, Canada, Western Europe, Israel, Japan, Australia and New Zealand) do not need visas to enter Sri Lanka; automatic entry for 30 days is given on arrival, and this can be renewed twice on payment of a fee.

For those who do not fall into the `no visas required’ category, a visa is essential before entry. Visas can be obtained at Sri Lankan diplomatic missions abroad.
