Lucerne Travel Guide

Spread out on the northern bank of the serene blue Lake Lucerne , the town of Lucerne lies enfolded by tall Alps. It is one of Switzerland’s most picturesque destinations- and with good reason too. The towering peak of the snow-clad Mt Pilatus is reflected in the placid deep blue waters of the lake as it watches over the town. The medieval ambience gives the town its character and personality as not just the capital of the Canton of Lucerne but also a major commercial and cultural centre. This is the birthplace of Wagner and the venue of the prestigious International Music Festival, the brainchild of the composer and conductor Arturo Toscanini.

The Germans call it Luzern, the Italians Lucerna and the English, Lucerne. Call it what you like – but its elegant bridges, medieval façades and old market squares are sure to steal your heart and take your breath away. Interesting museums, lively bars and delightful cafés will keep you entertained and if you tire of urban delights, then the countryside offers opportunities for sports of every kind, from trekking and climbing to rowing and angling. The perfect base for exploring the Swiss countryside - and a great place to visit for itself: that’s Lucerne.
