People and Society of Tanzania

Tanzanian demography is multi-ethnic with over 130 ethnic groups living in the country. Predominant amongst them are the majority Sukuma tribe of Bantu origin. Inhabitants of Indian and Arab descent make up 1% of the total population and live mostly in Zanzibar and along the mainland coast.

The national language is Swahili and English is the official language. Many other local African languages and dialects are spoken by the different tribes. Kiswahili is the language of the Swahili people; its roots lie in the Bantu language but Kiswahili has imbibed many words from Arabic. The Arab community of Zanzibar speaks mostly Arabic.
