Festivals and Events in Bangkok

The people of Thailand celebrate many, many festivals.

Songkran is one of the major festivals of Bangkok. It is a water festival in which people take to the streets to soak each other and celebrate the Thai New Year. Usually celebrated between the 13-15th of April its exact date varies as Songkran is celebrated in accordance with the solar calendar.

Visaka Bucha Day is the holiest day in the Buddhist calendar. It honours the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. Celebrated on a full moon day in May, the celebration is marked by a beautiful candlelit procession that takes place around Bangkok''s Wat Benjamabophit.

The Loy Krathong celebrated on a full moon night in November is a beautiful festival. All waterways, rivers, beaches and canals are illuminated with hundreds and thousands of candles placed on kratongs (little boats made out of the trunk of a banana tree adorned with flowers and incense). People say a little prayer before the candles are ready to float away as it is believes to purge one of sins, bad luck and evil spirits.

The Birthday of His Majesty celebrated in the month of December. It is an incredible and grand affair filled with energy and enthusiasm and is celebrated throughout the country. There is a splendid fireworks display near the Grand Palace and flags, portraits of His Majesty and lights decorate every street and building throughout the country.
