Cappadocia Travel Guide

Cappadocia is among the most beautiful regions of Turkey and is best known for its moon-like landscape, mysterious underground cities (more than a hundred), gorgeous valleys and amazing rock- cut cave churches and houses. All the unusual rock formations in the ancient town of Cappadocia (then Kapadokya) were created as a result of the eroding rains and winds for millions of years- it’s entirely the nature’s creation!

The Cappadocian region depicts a fine blend of history, culture, religion, art and it took nearly 30 million years in sculpting the rocks of Cappadocia. Bounded by underground cities, towns, churches and chapels, these ancient structures of Cappadocia exist since the Bronze Age and were built for protection and religious purposes.

So come and enjoy the experience of floating over the fairy chimneys in a hot-air balloon, hiking through the scenic gorges, vineyards and wineries, tasting various delicacies and wines and exploring the ancient cave cities- the appealing town of Cappadocia will surely grip you.

While in Cappadocia, do not miss out on the wonderful Whirling Dervishes performance! It’s a mind boggling religious ritual performed by the semazens in the town.

Have you ever imagined staying in a cave for a night….well Cappadocia offers accommodation in the form of cave hotels! These modern cave inns provide all the basic comforts. Amazing cave rooms and suites are available at Esbelli Evi (the Esbelli house) and Serinn House.

Cappadocia was once known as Hattie in the late bronze-age and the underground city of Cappadocia was to protect the locals from wild animals.

Did you know that pigeons have been a source of food and fertilizer in Cappadocia? Yes, not the chemical but the use of pigeon fertilizer is the secret behind the famed reputation of Cappadocian fruits as the sweetest and most succulent in Turkey- entirely due to the pigeons' droppings.
