Best Time to Visit Kiev

Kiev experiences a humid continental climate, which is characterized by damp and hot summers (June to August) and chilly winters (December-February). However, even the spring month of May and the autumn month of November usually finds themselves included in the beginning of summer and winter respectively. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year but majorly pours down between April and July as well as November. From the onset of November and all through March, you’ll be greeted with snowfall making its way to Kiev. On an average, January wins the title of being the coldest month of the year along with receiving maximum snowfall. Its summer counterpart is the month of July which is the hottest time of the year. However, if you look at the month(s) receiving maximum rainfall, June is the clear winner.

The peak tourist season in Kiev consists of July and August, when tourists from all over the world swarm the place. May through September is considered as the best time to visit Kiev, but if you aren’t afraid of the city’s winters, there is nothing like the colder months to pay Kiev a visit. The fact that winter season hosts a number of activities and sports earn the season additional brownie points, thereby overlooking the weather conditions in the process- which quite honestly, aren’t as bad as they are made out to be. Therefore, going in off-season (October-April) won’t be such a bad idea, after all.

If festivals entice you, Kiev presents tourists with plenty of options, with the city’ calendar booked all through May to October and a festival or two taking place in February. If you visit Kiev in May-July, you’ll surely have a great time attending the Opera Gala, Zelyonka Contemporary Dance Theatre Festival, Piano Music Concert, Kyiv Fire Fest (fire show), the Ukraine Bike Day, GlobalGathering and Ukrainian world music festival "Kraina Mriy". However, if you decide to give summer months a miss, no need to pull a long face as September and October has quite a few festivals to be proud of, including Kiev International Tango Festival, Molodist- Kiev International Film Festival, Ukrainian Fashion Week and Jazz in Kiev Festival. February is the time for InterCharm Ukraine, so plan your trip as per you preference.
