Attractions in north Kauai include the Kilauea Lighthouse dating back to 1913, the Waioli Mission established in 1837 by Christian missionaries, Smith's Tropical Paradise and Fern Grotto. The amazing Na Pali coast to the north west is accesible only by hiking or can be viewed on helicopter flights. On the west coast, Waimea is the site where Captain Cook first landed and is also the starting point for the strikingly beautiful Waimea Canyon which stretches for 10 miles inland and is 3,600 ft deep and 2 miles wide. Other interesting sites are the small town of Poipu, the old sugar plantation of Kilohana, Kokee State Park and Kauai Museum. Molokai boasts of the Meyer Sugar Mills, built in 1877, the Kalaupapa National Historic Park, a former leper colony, the pristine Halawa Valley and the beautiful Papahoku beach.
