History of Yellowstone National Park

Native Americans knew about the region and hunted for game here. The first white man to set foot here was the explorer John Colter who chanced upon the exploding geysers and abundant wildlife in 1807. His first reports of this unique area were dismissed as Colter's Hell. However, validation of his account by subsequent prospectors and trappers made the US Government take notice. In 1872, in order to preserve this unusual area, the government declared it as the country's first national park. Early management of the park was problematic and the army was given charge in 1886. In 1917, a National Park Service was created and the park became one of the biggest tourist attractions of the area.
