Wales Tourism

Wales or Cymru as it is called by the natives is a part of the United Kingdom - yet different. A squat peninsula which juts out from the Western part of Britain, it’s a land of steep seaside cliffs, rugged mountains and heather-clad grasslands; a land with a culture which still manages to retain many of the original Celtic traditions of the region. The Welsh, though they have been, since the 16th century, a part of Britain, and therefore economically and socially pretty closely linked with their larger neighbour, have succeeded in holding on to a cultural identity of their own- an identity that is manifested in many forms.

The Welsh language, for instance, so very different from English; and the delightful festival known as the Royal National Eistedfodd of Wales- a celebration of all that is Welsh. And it is this rich culture, combined with the spectacular natural beauty of the region, which makes Wales such an attractive destination for most tourists. Furthermore, it’s close to England, Cardiff is only two hours’ drive from London, and therefore a convenient place to get a taste of what the UK has to offer other than the more mundane attractions of English cities.

Did you know? Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch is the world’s longest railway station name in Wales.

The Prince of Wales is not even Welsh.

All the statues of the Cardiff Castle are surrounded by animals. There are more sheep than humans in Wales. Sheep population is four times greater than the population of humans in Wales.

Welsh alphabets do not have the alphabets K, Q, V and Z.

Mount Everest is named after a Welshman- Sir George Everest from Breconshire.

Abraham Lincoln, Jack Daniel, Howard Huges, Tom Cruise, Catherina Zeta Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton have Welsh descent.
